Backups: the 3-2-1 rule without the fuss

Three copies, two kinds of storage, one away from home. And the step almost everyone forgets.

Drawing of three hard drives with 3-2-1 underneath

You only notice a backup when you need it. And then it is too late to find out that it does not work. With the 3-2-1 rule you are covered, even when things go wrong.

    The rule

    1. 3 copies of your important data: the original plus two backups.
    2. 2 kinds of storage, for example a NAS and an external drive. If one fails, you still have the other.
    3. 1 copy away from home, in another place or encrypted online. For when there is a fire, a theft or a flood.

    Ransomware

Ransomware encrypts everything it can reach, including a backup that is always connected to your computer. So make sure there is always one copy it cannot reach: a drive you disconnect, or storage that keeps old versions and cannot be overwritten.

    The step everyone forgets

Test restoring. Every now and then, pick a few files and restore them. Only then do you know for sure that your backup works.

    Encrypt it

A backup contains everything you want to protect. Encrypt it, especially when it leaves the building, and keep the key in a safe place.
